You are a film director. How will you stage and direct the opening scenes of Hamlet? What ideas and emotions, what tone, do you want to establish, in order to reflect the play’s themes and major conflicts?
In your “Hamlet notebook,” write your own notes about scenery, effects, lighting, blocking (relative physical movements of actors), etc.–i.e., any visual effects that affect tone and atmosphere.
THEN, we will watch several film versions, a generation apart from each other–1948, 1980 and 2007.
As time allows, start reading 1.3–for tensions between Hamlet’s self-perception and other characters’ opinion of him (Polonius, Ophelia and Laertes).
